I have Alice Mary Till's father down as Richard Francis Till, Francis is a bit of a coincidence isn't it? What more info do you have? I hope you left an email address, I'll be in touch.
Alice Till is my great grandfather's first wife, so her father is actually not related to me, my great grandmother was Fanny Alice Samways, James Cole Clarke's second wife.

Rugby, RESULT
Oct 16What a great game and result on Saturday! we started off as usual with a trip to Canterbury, where there was a local food fair on, with stalls and demonstrations and things, and lots of local food producers in attendance. Got some bread and some plants and some cider and some biscuits, would love to see events like this going on more often. Lunch at Wagamama for a rare treat and back to watch the rugby with the in-laws.
Power supply problems at my brother-in-laws in Etchinghill, fuses blowing, and we had the fear of missing the game. Some confusion over the suround sound on the TV saw someone hit the wrong button at just the wrong time, and the TV turned to static just as Josh Lewsey was powering towards the line at only a minute and a half in! A fantastic start to the game, I would imagine, we just about got up and running again in time for the replays. A tense game after that, we were cursing every kick Jonny missed, but he got there in the end. We stayed up far too late after the game drinking cider and wine we'd bought in town.
Sunday, a bit groggy, we shopped and not much else until the South Africa game in the evening, they're a bit too good, fingers crossed for the final on Saturday though. We have a family birthday celebration that day so it will heighten a victory or temper a defeat anyway.
Work, still very busy, the team is back up to strength again following a holiday, and hopefully we're getting more staff soon too.
Listening to more Rebus and also some Italian language lessons in far advance of next year's holiday. Watching, not much really, Our amazon dvd rentals have been held up by these postal strikes. From the little I know of the issue, I have no sympathy at all, but I don't want to say too much as I'm dependent on the post to deliver my Nan's birthday present tomorrow. Friendly posties, if you are reading this, please go back to work in the Kent and Hampshire regions now. We have had the occasional handful of mail here on the days between the strikes, whereas in SW1 where Clare works they've been hit by unofficial wildcat strikes on the days between official disruption.
In other TV watching news, there are too many poor quality food shows on at the moment, normally I love these, but Nigella Lawson and the Wild Gourmets just make me want to kick the telly in with their insincerity and artifice. Hoping we can get some sort of cable TV set up soon, for a bit more choice and then the power of recording too, so I can watch the daytime shows like Saturday Kitchen at a time convenient to me...
Damn, have I really been hosting that Amazon ad all this time with revenues going back to Channelfly?
Ciao!

Jaiku's joining Google
Oct 10I forget the point of Jaiku, it was one of those Web2.0 startups that did the social networking thing, a bit Facebook, a lot Twitter (but better), for updat1ng people who don't care with exactly what you're up to minute by minute... they were the first one I saw that let you do it all automatically, wihtout ever having to return to the site, so while I've not been back to jaiku.com since I first signed up (oh yeah, I signed up anyway) my page there is fully up to date with every blog post, every track I've listened to, and every gig in Folkestone that I've listed on FG without actually going to or knowing much about. Here's Jaiku's announcement:
While its too soon to comment on specific plans, we look forward to working with our new friends at Google over the coming months to expand in ways we hope you'll find interesting and useful. Our engineers are excited to be working together and enthusiastic developers lead to great innovation. We look forward to accomplishing great things together.
In order to focus on innovation instead of scaling, we have decided to close new user sign-ups for now. But fear not! All our Jaiku services will stay running the way you are used to and you will continue to be able to invite your friends to Jaiku.
We have put together a quick Q&A about the acquisition at jaiku.com/help/google
Jyri Engestrom and Petteri Koponen, Jaiku Founders
Not sure who else that I know is signed up, I only know of Kosso, Ro and Rob who all signed up at the same time as me. I guess now this will start to be incorporated into gmail or something that'll encourage me to use it. Maybe.

Tales of Edgar Allen Poe
Oct 5See this ebay auction, loads of really good scans of Harry Clarke illustrations there, worth checking out out just for those, even if you don't bid... In fact, please don't bid, because I might.
There is a much later reprint available, that's too high a starting price though I think.

Amy Winehouse (aged 14) in The Fast Show
Oct 5Nice one popbitch.com.
Just found this post from 2004 regarding Amy Winehouse (and I'm sure there's more in the archive), where I was whooping with glee because she bigged up my website in an interview with the BBC. It's not archived on the webwise page, like they've airbrushed La Winehouse from the pages of history, so I wondered if it was anywhere else? Would look good, now she is a big star about to die and everything. But no. The wayback machine has version from February and then nothing again until this in June.
Bah.

Frank Skinner last night
Sep 29Quite a good gig last night, Frank was funny and rude, and likeable because of his self depracating ways. He did two sets, with an interval, and then came back to do a little song on his banjo too. He's on tour for another two months, so see him if you can.
I always forget what a bad venue the Leas Cliff Hall is, I guess most venues that were built for more sedate times are the same. The rush for the bar at half time was ridiculous, service was so slow we didn't get a drink at all. Every event I go to there's a similar crush at the bar, surely if this was sorted the venue would make more profit? I suggest selling cans of drink that can be dispensed more quickly, turning over more customers in the same amount of time, and Clare suggests lining up a few pints just before the interval so they can be handed out quicker. It's not like there's a lot of choice at the bar, so they can guess what people are going to order.
Also, more drink related annoyance, we got a drink on the way in, and then found out we weren't allowed to take it from the bar to our seats, so had to leave them, that's six whole pounds we won't see again. This rule had been relaxed seemingly by the interval, so for the second half everyone was refreshed except us, bah. This is just about enough to stop me going to a show there again, I'd rather see someone smaller at a proper comedy club like upstairs at Lanterns.
We went to Chambers for the first time in ages, it was very good, Club Buff were djing, proper indie, and it was comfortable and smashing and the beer was good too.
Today I have a night in, alone, hence posting here at this time. Clare has gone to Canterbury with Jenny the sister-in-law on a girls afternoon of shopping with food and drink to follow. I've already had a text updated from my favourite pub, but at least she's not gone to Wagamama without me. We're back in Canterbury tomorrow, on a shopping and lunch mission, probably Pizza Express this time though.
Been programming this afternoon, some work for popbitch.com, there is a redesign in the offing and I'm transferring some of the dynamic pages ideas from here to there. See how if you hit some random phrase on this site, you get sent to /some+random+phrase? That redirects to a script, passing in "some random phrase" and builds a page made up of content found in the database of old posts that matches "some random phrase". popbitch.com could do with something like that, but they do have a problem that there might be some libellous content among their archive of 500,000 old posts (and that gets purged frequently too) so I've always been a bit reticent about opening it up. Hopefully I'll come up with a system that'll work. One day that site will sell for a billion and then I'll be able to cash in. This time next year Rodney...
Hmm, guessing I didn't win the GBP88,000,000 euro millions super rollover then:
The special draw took place on Friday 28th September with no winners in the top prize category. The jackpot duly rolled down and was shared by 14 players in the 5+1 category. Each player won GBP6,989,367 or €9,839,058.
If one of them was you, will you buy me a house in Canterbury please?

Cure tickets
Sep 29Cure tickets are on their way, though of course I didn't buy them from ebay at a vastly inflated markup, I got them from Ticketbastard at a vastly inflated markup instead. Thirty five pounds each for the ticket, then another fiver each in ticketbastard profit fees, then another fiver postage.
At least we're not following the american system, yet. I followed a link for Ozzy Osborne tickets (again, not actually to ebay, just trying to encourage casual visitors there so I can cream off a little commission from these humungous internet profits, that's what all the new ebay links over in the side bar are about too) and though they weren't on sale yet, I was offered the chance to join ticket club for another forty five dollars so I could buy the tickets that weren't on sale yet, or I could make a minimum bid of $180 to buy premium tickets.
KISS are probably the very worst exponents of this system, I am kind of fearing them ever coming to the UK again. Hopefully with them never having been as popular here as in the USA there'll be no probs getting them.
The one time I did see KISS, at Finsbury Park, I left about half way through to meet some friends in the pub, tsk, where were my priorities?
UPDATE: Cure tickets are going like hot cakes, even the seated ones, glad I got up early and we've got ours. If the chums don't come up with the cash quickly enough, I'll be flogging theirs too, hurrah!

Programming is a poetry for our time
Sep 28A fairly new song up on MJ Hibbett's youtube channel, not actually a new song, nor actually even new to youtube as it's been up there for a few days already, but hey I've not seen it and you probably haven't either, so let's pretend it's all new and shiny and just enjoy it:
In case you're reading this from clarkeology.com/rss.xml (as I KNOW some of you are. Well one of you) or you've hit upon the new phpalised version of this page, where my youtube links might not be working, go straight there and see it in situ, or maybe it's embedded in Hibbett's official site somewhere.
What a dreary day it is here today. It generally does look a bit dull when I'm here at work as our office has tinted windows like some pimp daddy low-rider, and the sky always looks grey from my desk. However today I have taken the time to look out of a plain glass window, and it's crappy there too.
Writing this on my lunch break, and watching the new series of Heroes out of the corner of my eye, as a mate is watching it on his computer, we saw it last night and I liked it. It was like the first series all over again, started off a bit cheesy but I was soon gripped by it, hope it keeps up the standard. What was that faux English mistaken for a Japanese all about? Did he really say "black guard" instead of "blackguard"? PAH!
Also watching and listening to and reading Rebus and Midsomer Murders at the moment, we've just upped our dvd rental plan to unlimited disks per month, though just the one disk at home at a time, so we're likely to be limited to about 8 disks a month at most because of the postal turnaround... this is new for Amazon:
Did you know?
New from DVD Rental: Unlimited Rental Plans. Rent as many discs as you want each month. Plans cost GBP8.49 (1 disc at home at a time), GBP11.49 (2 discs at home at a time) and GBP14.49 (3 discs at home at a time). You can change your rental plan by going to "Your Account", then selecting "Manage DVD Rental Account Information".
We're on the 8.49 option, and the scheme is well recommended. Whenever they've made a mistake or a disk has got lost they've fixed it up really quickly. All the postage is prepaid, it's a nice easy scheme.
Just got an alert that a Folkestone flat is to be featured on homes under the hammer, probably that was today, and we've missed it bah. Would be interesting to see what they say about the area...
Frank Skinner tonight.

The Cure playing Wembley
Sep 27The Cure are playing Wembley on March 20th according to the nme. Thanks to Emma for pointing this out, she's right though, we have been spoiled in seeing them in the very cosy confines of the Barfly, as part of a lucky crowd of about 200 people. Can they still fill Wembley? It is only the arena, so about 20,000 capacity I think, but it's still a horrible horrible venue...
Tickets strangely go on sale Saturday morning, should we get some or what? It's sure to "sell out" immediately, (ie they'll put all the shit seats on sale and we'll buy them and they'll announce it's sold out, then they'll allocate more tickets after they've had the news story about
how quickly they sold out wembley)...
Nothing on thecure.com about this yet, I don't know if there's a pre-order number for fans or anything. Oh yes, I am a real fan, better at being a fan than all the other "so" "called" "Cure" "fans", read my past adventures...

It's not the show that's on TV, he's just being interviewed
It's on BBC Newsnight or something, but it's on at about quarter to six, so not Newsnight. The trailer was meant to be a load of outtakes from Ricky talking to camera, but it looked lame and unconvincing really.
Not seen this show, so that's a treat for me one day, though (I never go out now so I have to live through my memories of when I did used to go out) I have seen him do standup a couple of times before, he's great.
Seen a few of those "top 100 kids tv shows" type shows just recently, they have all the same old talking heads on them, though these must have been filmed a while ago, and have Ricky Gervais on them, before The Office I think, quite funny, though he seems a bit more like a naughty school boy and not the globe straddling comedy behemoth he is now.
Ooh, I say I never go out these days, but this Friday I'm off to see Frank Skinner, he's coming to Folkestone. my gigography will be updated again at last!
Been to anything recently then?

Site's been away for a few hours
Sep 21Maybe it's still away now, maybe you can't read this, maybe no-one reads this anyway, whatever, the site has been away for a few hours because the hosting company have moved me onto another machine because I was getting too many hits and that.
Funny old week at work, very busy but don't feel I've really achieved very much, got moved from my top priority project to a priority zero project (ie higher) because that was also coming up close to deadline and the person who was doing that has been moved off to a priority minus one project of some description.
Had a quiet few days without the lovely wife, who is off in Nice. This means I can watch what I want on TV and eat whatever I like! Turns out I don't like to eat the stuff I like as much as I thought I did, and I like to watch the same things as I do when Clare is here, but I've not enjoyed them quite so much on my own.
Tomorrow going out on a wild mushroom hunt at a secret location in the morning, and then not going to Canterbury for lunch for the first time in ages... Not sure what to do with the rest of the weekend, reckon I ought to surprise the wife by finishing off those jobs around the house I keep putting off, like cleaning, hoovering, washing, ironing, putting all the broken bits of computers away etc...

Oh yes, I just noticed an enormous traffic spike
I must have submit my rss to podcast.com a while ago when I posted some mp3's... you want to be filtering out the feeds you use, looking to see if they really do have enclosures of the right type.
Or maybe I should look at my feed, I think I probably do have image enclosures, but they should be marked up correctly...

Hot weekend
Aug 5Had a good week, lots going on at work, including the aforementioned rowing trip and picnic meeting in Hythe, very nice, then also a Harry Potter themed barbecue at work (I'm still plodding through the audiobook, don't tell me how it ends), and a pub lunch at Bar Vasa. Not sure this week was as productive as some.
Been to London this weekend for Clare's cousin's 30th birthday at Rumi Bar in Fulham. Stayed in a nice hotel near Victoria, got a Wagamama dinner in and fed squirrels in St James Park. Fitted just about everything in then, though damn it was hot. Meant to do a bit of shopping today, but it was too hot on the streets, so we just came home.
Have been watching this book illustrated by Harry Clarke, but the price has gone a bit high for me, 167 quid and rising.
Chilli for tea, and a DVD of Midsomer Murders, so just about everything is right with the world.

Gigs I was at this week
Jul 24Not "this week" this week, but this week in gigging history. Just on a whim, and because I haven't done anything on this site for ages, I added gigs I was at this week in history to the bottom of my gigography page. This week I saw Suicidal Tendencies, Sultans of Ping, Baby Bird, Idlewild, Tiger, and MJ Hibbett. Now there's a festival lineup and a half.
There was a Mexican themed barbecue at work today, I bet you wish you worked somewhere as cool as me. No food I could eat, but FEAR NOT, I will be getting my intake at Escondido on Friday. Can't wait.
