My 19th birthday gig !!!
Deeeee-lite were a bit shite as I remember. The Revolting Cocks were better at the Astoria. Remember the strippers and you stage diving whilst I stood at the back in agony for some reason. Nirvana at the Hummingbird, now called the Academy and not as good. We also Ned's at Reading University at some point, and also got in free to see Iron Maiden in Hammersmith in 1990 I think. Saw Jonathon King outside. Whatever happened to him ?

Hmm, having no joy tracking down the full 100 of Time Out's best london gigs chart they did last issue, but prompted by a thread on PopExcellent I've had a think about my top five gigs... I'm sure I'll think of more later and strike these out...
1. Blur @ Goldsmith's College, New Cross, That London, Reading warmup 1999 (I think) - BLIND drunk, fell in a bush in front of my new boss, and you can see me getting dragged out of the photo pit by security on the South Bank Show Special that was filmed there.
2. The Revolting Cocks @ London Astoria, January 1991 - they had strippers on stage, you can see me stage diving on the bootleg video of the gig.
3. Wolfsbane @ The Marquee, October 1990 maybe? Can't remember too much about it, but I know I always put this gig on my list, even though I went there on my own. More stagediving.
4. Belle & Sebastian, Union Chapel, July 1997 - Partly just because Idleberry popped up again here and I know she's a monster fan. We paid way over the odds from a tout to get in, but just had to see them. Got into the after show in the back bar, there was no-one there but a few of my friends and Jarvis Cocker, it was ace. No stagediving.
5. Suede, Camden Electric Ballroom, July 2002 - Fan club gig, first we had to yawn and drink through the new album, but then they played a hits set (which they'd been not doing for a while), then a set where they had a "wheel of fortune" on stage with all the songs they NEVER play, so we got some of their best stuff including "My Dark Star" and "The Living Dead"...
Hmm, I have no local gigs here, from my many years in Portsmouth and Southampton, mostly because I can't remember much about them, what a shame... Also none from gigs by my fave bands that I've seen, like Pixies, AC/DC, Motley Crue, and KISS. Also I have no Darkness gigs here, even though I've seen them 40 times or more. maybe just because I'm slightly down on them right now. It's time to threaten to go through all the old ticket stubs again and put all these old gigs in my online calendar!
Hello, is anyone still listening?

Catching up on what friends have to say, and I find out from Darryl that there is a closing date for the Astoria, LA2, and Metro. The sites of some great gigs, key moments of my time in London probably. A shame. Think my first time there was to see Under Neath What in 1990* and what will obviously now turn out to have been my last was a Foo Fighters not at all secret gig in 2005. See my Astoria history with brief details of all the gigs I can remember being at there, if you are interested... 2005 does seem too long ago now I come to think about it... Other highlights, The Darkness obviously, Blur, Suede, Trail of Dead, The Revolting Cocks and lots and lots of NME Brats gigs, particularly the year some friends made fake passes and got lots of people in... Those were the best times, on our regular table upstairs with all our friends around us. I'm feeling a bit weepy about it actually. Lots missing I'm sure from my history page, can you remember any dates, or got any tickets?
Similar memories of the LA2, though that was more about odd daytime gigs, David Devant and foolishly drunken indie club nights.
Metro seems a bit later, but it was the location of a GREAT last minute Darkness gig (we decided to go at the last minute, they'd probably booked it in advance) where a good chum stole Justin's t-shirt, and gave it to me. I saw Kaiser Chiefs there too, when they were called something else (Parva). Ah, I'll find more time to reminisce later...
A chum in the pub was saying it'll be great if Indigo (in The O2, not Club Indigo in Folkestone) does fill the gap left by the Astoria, as it's practically in Kent, but for getting the train back after the gig the location of the Astoria was better. Who wants to be driving back from a gig? Maybe we will, now we are old and actually going to buy a car and things...
*An oft repeated story, queued up outside the venue (back in the day when I didn't know better and went to the gig before the doors open) I bought a fanzine off someone, who tipped me off that Metallica were playing at The Marquee down the road. But I was with friends, who were not interested in moving, so we didn't go along. It was a really secret secret gig, supporting someone else. I heard from someone else later who was there to see the real headliners that it was a surprise to them when Metallica played.
